About the event

Join us for a volunteer afternoon to help support the future success of our new woodland. You'll also have the chance to learn about the site, the species planted and best practice for woodland management.

This event will be a 2 in 1 - helping the site in 2 key ways:

  • Removing an area of invasive young sycamore trees
  • Building a screen/fence perfect for wildlife watching, using the natural material collected from the sycamores

In one area of the woodland, there are hundreds of young sycamore trees growing very densely (seeded by older sycamores nearby). These sycamores are now hindering the native trees we planted, with such a dense growth resulting in little light now reaching the ground floor.

The sycamores can still be cut easily, and have straight, flexible stems perfect for woodcraft and weaving. This means we can use the sycamore to build a wildlife-watching screen. Visitors to the Forest of Flowers in future will be able use the screen as a hide, with more birds and mammals likely to appear with humans out of sight!

You don't need any former knowledge to take part - all required instruction will be given on the day. You just need:

  • Warm clothes
  • Gloves (we have some spares available if required)
  • Suitable footwear - the terrain is uneven and often muddy so waterproof boots or wellies are highly recommended

We will also provide some well-earned hot drinks and cake after the session, and we can answer any questions you might have on managing woodland and wildflower meadows.

Please note:

- There are a limited number of places, so please ensure you register for a ticket before attending.

- This event is not suitable for small children.

- The event will be completely outdoors.

Any questions, please let us know. We hope to see you there!
