About the event

Talk & Mindfulness Walk by Author Rachel Lister Jones

Join us for a very special event as we hear local nature writer Rachel Lister Jones discuss her new book The Wonders of the Wild Places. Rachel will talk about her passion for our natural world, featuring some fascinating and little-known facts about the UK's flora and fauna.

With her book designed to inspire the reader to explore our environment, Rachel will help us do just that by taking us on a guided walk around the Forest of Flowers habitat. We'll go into the heart of the woodland and wildflower meadows, with our guide helping us to spot and learn about the spring wildflowers and wildlife surrounding us. As a trained Mindfulness Coach, Rachel will also lead some mindfulness exercises to help us absorb and appreciate the natural world around us.

The Wonders of the Wild Places by Rachel Lister Jones

From the mountains to the sea, woodland to farmland, heaths and riversides we have many habitats in the United Kingdom, and The Wonders of the Wild Places provides information about some of the many species found in these habitats. It is packed with interesting facts about nature designed to encourage you to go out and enjoy the wonders of the wild places.

It covers many subjects from folklore to language, social history to the latest science. The Wonders of the Wild Places also explains the current threats to the natural world and provides details of what is being done to protect nature and how individuals can help nature. After reading The Wonders of the Wild Places you will never see the natural world in the same way again.

About Rachel Lister Jones

Rachel Lister Jones lives in Easingwold in her home county of North Yorkshire. She has been fascinated in nature since she was very young – even from her very first word, which was ‘bird’, she has had a particular interest in ornithology and botany. In addition to being a writer and a poet, she works for a local charity and runs her own company (@wildwalksyorks), leading mindful nature walks and running children’s nature-based craft activities.

Rachel has been writing since she was very young, including fiction for children and adults, as well as poetry.  Many of her poems are inspired by her love of nature. The Wonders of the Wild Places is her first non-fiction book and she has enjoyed writing it so much she is already working on a follow-up.

In her spare time Rachel volunteers with the Woodland Trust and her local environmental group, and also enjoys taking her beloved whippet, Lady Millicent, for walks in the Howardian Hills.

"Thank you for a most enjoyable, relaxing, varied and informative event. It was a very special, unique and memorable afternoon. The structure was excellent as it was so varied and the activities linked together so well. We were made to feel welcome from the moment we arrived and the setting under the gazebo in the orchard was absolutely perfect... and your friendly cat was an added bonus!" - August 2022

"From our perspective it was just the right balance, giving people a chance to learn, share their stories, mix with others, ask questions. As always, your knowledge and enthusiasm shone through and I’m sure everyone found the afternoon useful and interesting." - August 2022
